THE WESTERN REGION
The current water supply coverage for the region is about 44% with current total customer strength of 31,357. The customer metering ratio also stands at 93%.
Water supply currently does not cover the entire region. GWCL operates and manages eight (8) water supply systems in six (6) Metropolitan and District Assemblies in Western Region.
Sources of Water Supply
For purposes of operations, the Daboase and Inchaban systems constitute the city operations whilst the other six systems constitute the rural operations.
The Western Region operates two (2) water supply systems that supply water to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan area and surrounding communities. These water systems are:
This is a conventional water treatment plant with its raw water source obtained from the Pra River. Installed capacity of the headworks is 27,270m³/day (6 million gallons per day). The average daily production output is about 22,720m³ (5 million gallons per day) and the supply area covers Takoradi and its environs.
This is a conventional water treatment plant with its raw water source obtained from the Anankwari River. It has an installed capacity of 18,180m³ (4 million gallons per day). The average daily production output is about 9000m³/day (2 million gallons per day) and the supply area is the Sekondi township and its environs.
The rural systems, with the exception of Bonsa Headworks, benefitted from the Subsequent Year Investment Program (SYIP), which is intended to stabilize supply levels in the rural areas. The Western Region operates six (6) rural water supply systems. These water systems are:
This is a conventional water treatment plant which takes its raw water source from the Bonsa River. Its installed capacity is 4,500m³/day (1 million gallons per day). Its average production output is about 3,400m³/day or about 750,000 gallons a day and the supply area is Tarkwa township and its environs.
Prestea supply system operates nine (9) boreholes that feed two (2) new water treatment plants. The installed capacity is 2880m³ per day (633,600 gallons daily).
Aboso supply system operates six (6) boreholes that feed two (2) new water treatment plants. Its installed capacity is 1080m³ per day (237,600 gallons daily).
Bogoso supply operates five (5) boreholes that feed the new water treatment plant. It produces 45m³ per hour. The plant produces 810m³ per day (178,200 gallons daily)
Elubo water system operates six (6) boreholes that feed the new water treatment plant. It produces 1080m³ per day (237,600 gallons daily).
This is a conventional water treatment plant which takes its raw water source from the Denkyemzule River. Its installed capacity is 1,136m³/day (250,000 gallons per day). Its average production output is about 300m³/day or about 66,000 gallons a day and the supply area is Axim township and its environs.
Axim water systems also has eight (8) boreholes that is constructed under the SYIP to augment water supply from the conventional water treatment plant.
